A Film by Lynn Furge, Senior Fashion Editor and Billy Rood, Director, Fig Media
When approaching Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York Spring 2012 I was really inspired by film. I feel it is the only valid way for brands to take back their identity and show a more three-dimensional vision of their inspiration. Considering The Dirty Durty Diary as a growing brand itself and launching Issue 4 this winter entitled “Cinematic Celluloid” I wanted to take an intimate look at those of us who are the slaves of fashion, the people that “hurry up to wait” wander aimlessly to find focused inspiration, and anticipate to predict.
It was no question to collaborate with film maker Billy Rood of Fig Media. “At the heart of fashion week are dedicated and passionate people who are willing to work day after day on little to no sleep for the sake of fashion,” explains Rood. “I wanted to capture that world like a portrait and a study of a day in the life. One of my closest friends, Katrina Hoernig of DNA, would tell me about her world as a model and I would tell her about mine as a filmmaker/photographer. Two different sides and two completely different experiences.
I wanted to tell both of those stories and experiences within the scale of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.” His team of photographers shot over 60 shows live in print, as well as captured one hundred plus hours of video throughout the week. Back in the day you would have found someone’s journal… years later, captivating you enough to feel how the person themselves felt. Hopefully this short film moves you just as much.
