//DDD//Nautica, Fall 2012
Written by Gordon West, Contributing Fashion Editor Photography Gordon West Nautica docked its Fall 2012 collection at Ed’s Chowder House in a secluded second floor reception of the Empire Hotel this afternoon. Because, when unveiling a ready-to-wear line inspired by the iconic watermen of the American northeast coast, where else than a chowder house across from Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week?Denim utility jackets, corduroy trousers, wool toggle coats and ever-essential shawl collar sweaters all paid homage in this collection to the sailmakers, dockhands, admirals and coastal prepsters that man the chilly Atlantic waterways. And like those chilly waters, the collection was heavy on blues be it a subdued cornflower pant, an indigo heather 1/2 zip sweater, or a deep wool navy toggle coat. The blues, all mostly complimented by white, creams and pale grey, were momentarily broken up by a nubuck sailing vest, vivid burgundy corduroys, a traditional tartan plaid button-down, two novelty sweaters (the kind you actually enjoy receiving as a gift), a green shetland wool jacket and a seen-from-miles-away orange down parka. The collection, as we’ve come to expect from Nautica, is crisp, clean and as enticingly handsome as ever. Yet, perhaps the sleekest moment of the presentation was an ivory shetland wool gear jacket that was so cocktail debonaire it will have you aching to either be or date a sailmaker, dockhand, admiral or coastal prepster if they can manage to look even just half as dapper.
