JJ’s Fun Factory presents: Sitting Down and talking Dirty with Hohme

By JJ Maxwell, Fashion Editor

David Heyerman aka Hohme is a quickly ascending master of mix in NYC. In under a year since moving to NYC he has already snagged a slew of prime DJ gigs, private events in the Hamptons to residencies at some of the hottest clubs and venues in Manhattan including XIX, Norwood, and Apotheke.

Hohme was born and bred in Southern Oregon, where he excelled at playing sports but whose focus has always been music and performance. From the age of four he was an ardently honed dancer (touring internationally as a teenager) as well as a classically trained Suzuki pianist. Throughout his college career at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he majored in Business and Entrepreneurship, he was always the go-to-guy for music play lists for numerous social events, and saved money to buy music equipment right out of college.

Disciplined and dedicated to his craft, he practiced non-stop for an entire year while developing a tech website titled TinyComb.com with a friend. The site has been featured in NY Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today.

Hohme and I sat down for a quick Q and A in his East Village apartment to discuss music, culture, and the idea that it is just fine to be a little “Dirty Durty”:

JJ: So Hohme, thanks for having me over and of course thanks for the welcome beer, how would you describe your music sets?

H: Well right now of course it depends on the night. I mean some of my residencies like soul funk stuff, some like Top 40 but I would say if I was going in to do a set and play whatever I wanted I would go in and slam new wave house, progressive house, electro, and throw in some dub step when the timing is right.

JJ: Nice, to date what has been your most kick-ass show?

H: Oooh I guess my most exciting show to date was last Halloween when I opened for Guru Josh Project, you know the electro group “Infinityyyy” yeah I got a chance to open for them at La Pomme in the city. Other than that my residency at Apotheke on the weekend is always insane and is a great time. So always depends on the night, but it has been pretty good these days.

JJ: So, give me a few DJs or musicians who are really, in your opinion, laying it down right now?

H: I’m really into right now the new group of French house producers like Breakbot and Louie La Roche, I have always loved what Treasure Fingers and Fools Gold produces- that is some awesome talent. But honestly I don’t usually listen to specific artists all the time and their entire work. I am a tech person and constantly listening to new music online, artist feeds, and subscriptions I have so I listen to a lot of singles. When it comes down to it I try to focus on what of course sounds good to me and what people will feel and dance to.

JJ: That’s always the bottom line right… so you have lived in NYC for about a year so where do you go in this concrete jungle to get relaxed and inspired?

H: Good Question…umm well I do a lot of my work from my house in the East Village and I love the area so much so I have to say I do my best most inspiring work from “Hohme.”

JJ: Ahh well perfect fit…Speaking off, where did “Hohme” come from?

H: The name is centered on the “ohm” in the middle because I want people while listening to my music to feel at ease and at peace and also be having a great time.

JJ: What would be your ultimate dream as a DJ? Who would you be opening for and where?

H: God, I would have to say more importantly my dream would be a respected source in the music industry not only with the music I produce but also the other artists I bring to light with my website WelcomeHohme.com. All I do is recommend new artists and of course put up my mixes but I really love showing people new music so at some point I would love to be in a position where people book me for the new music I choose and showcase as well as my DJ abilities.

JJ: Beautiful, okay well this is an interview for the Dirty Durty Diary and our Dirty Love Letter site so let’s be real and I have to ask who would be your ultimate tap?

H: Man that is so hard to choose (Laughing) well I love brunettes and exotic women so I would have to say ladies like Miranda Kerr and the slumdog girl Freida Pinto really do it for me.

JJ: Okay so on a scale from 1-10 how internally dirty are you?

H: Well I try to pride myself on my outward gentlemanliness but in my mind I would have to say I am a six or seven.

JJ: Oh that’s pretty healthy..okay let’s play a game Fuck, Kill, Marry…. Ahhh let’s do Oprah, Tyra, and Ellen?

H: Oh man that’s tricky okay so I guess I have to kill Tyra I mean c’mon, and marry Oprah because she is super rich, and fuck Ellen because she likes a girls?!

JJ: You could discuss pointers with Ellen.

H: Yeah it could get pretty crazy in there!

JJ: Lastly because The Dirty Durty is a publication all about cutting edge art, fashion, music, and culture who do you know, or read, or follow on the twitter that just radiates culture?

H: Well I have tried to spend the last few years really trying to focus on my inner peace so I try to read and follow people who give words of wisdom. For example twitter feeds like tinybuddha or gurusinghh who all give daily advice that gives you peace on the inside that you can use on the outside.

JJ: Amazing well thanks buddy for sitting down with me!

H: Absolutely brother!
